GUANACASTE

The Guanacaste region stretches from the western edge of lake Arenal out to the Pacific coast, encompassing part of the Nicoya Peninsula, all the way up to the Nicaraguan border. This region tends to be a little drier than other areas of Costa Rica, with a wide variety of flora and fauna in its many National Parks.

In the North, the mega - park of  Guanacaste (Santa Rosa) protect delicate forest systems and provide a migration corridor for highland animals moving on to greener pastures in the rainy season. In the South, prehistoric limestone foundations make for an interesting landscaspe, and at Barra Honda, some breathtaking cave formations are sought by spelunkers from around the globe. At the southern edge of the Nicoya Peninsula, rocky beaches dotted with waterfalls and tide pools welcome those who want more than just a hammock on the beach.

With its own international airport, Daniel Oduber International Airport, located in Liberia, Guanacaste's capital and largest city, the province offers many attractions: sun and beaches, diving adventures, fishing, surfing and white water rafting. You can also enjoy the  tours of the canopy and other activities in combination with several volcanoes, protected national parks and tropical forests.

PALO VERDE NATIONAL PARK

Palo Verde is very important to ornithologists because of the 300 species of birds that have been recorded. Enormous numbers of herons and storks make their home in the park, as well as the rare jabiru stork, known to nest in Palo Verde. To accommodate birdwatchers, rangers have built raised platforms so that migratory birds can be observed during the rainy season.

One of Palo Verde's unusual characteristics is its wide range of habitats, due to both elevation and seasonal variations. In the wet season large areas of the forest are flooded, while in the dry season the opposite is true, so animals that normally live in the marsh have adapted to living in other areas until the rains re-irrigate the wet season marshlands.

BARRA HONDA

Formed over 60 million years ago when Costa Rica was at the bottom of the ocean. Water and carbon dioxide dissolved limestone layers in many places, causing vast underground cave systems to develop.
